periodontology
(Gum Diseases and Surgery)

Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies the structures that support the teeth and the diseases that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva, alveolar bone (the bone where the teeth are located), the periodontal ligament (the tissue around the tooth). Periodontologists are considered competent in the prevention, diagnosis and surgical and non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease and placement of dental implants.

Does gum recession get better?

Mild gingival recession can be treated by a periodontologist   by deep cleaning the affected area (Curettage). If excessive bone loss cannot be treated with curettage, gum surgery may be required to repair the damage caused by gingival recession. These operations are surgical treatments completed in approximately 30-45 minutes, including removing a piece of gum from the palate.

How to prevent gum disease?

The best way to prevent gum recession is to take good care of your mouth. Brush and floss your teeth daily and see your dentist or periodontist at least twice a year or as recommended. If you have gum recession, your dentist may want to see you more often. If gum recession is caused by a misaligned bite or teeth grinding, talk to your dentist about how to correct the problem.
